 The word "Urs" has been originated from "UROOS" which means "eventual meeting of an individual with God". It is believed that Huzoor Gharib Nawaz spent his last six days of life in Isolation in a Huzra (room meant for prayers) and the last day (6 th day) of Rajab, his splendid soul left the physical body. Every year Urs Mubarak is observed on his death anniversary in the month of Rajab, the Islamic month. Chadar; Ghilaph & Neema which are the offerings for the tomb are offered by numerous hundred thousand followers. Mehfils & Qawwalis are commenced and mass prayer calls for the eternal peace of the mankind. An interesting custom is the looting of Kheer (Milk Pudding) which distributed to the pilgrims as Tabarruk (blessed food); it is prepared in two large cauldrons called Degs.
The Ajmer Sharief Dargah is located at the concurrence of three bazaars. The visitors who come to get the blessings of the Khwaja make rich offerings which called Nazrana at the scared place where the saint has been buried. The offerings offered by devotees are the chadar, ghilaph and neema, which are votive offerings for the sepulcher. Also offered (Nazraana) of rose and jasmine flowers, sandalwood paste, nice smelled fragrance of perfumes and incense contribute to the aroma that floats in the air inside the holy place. The Urs is started up with the craning of a white flag on the Dargah by the Sajjada Nashin (successor representative) of Chishtis. It is done on the 25th of Jamadi-ul-Akhir (sixth lunar month), with the supplement of music. On the last day of the sixth month, the Jannati-Darwaza (gateway of heaven) is opened with the dawn of fresh sun. People cross this gate seven times with the trust and faith that if they do so they will be having a place in heaven.
The Urs at Ajmer , in the Indian state of Rajasthan, venerated the centenary of the Wali Allah Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Chishty who was the founder of Chishtiya Sufi order in India with six days of night-long dhikr/zikr Qawwali singing. This anniversary is celebrated in a big way in the seventh month of Islamic (lunar) calendar. Bulks of pilgrims visit Dargah from all over India and out of the country . This world popular Urs of Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Chishty (Khwaja Gharib Nawaz) is commemorated every year in the first week of Islamic month of Rajab, on seeing the moon of Rajab which is the seventh month of the Islamic calendar. The drums are beaten to herald the beginning of the yearly ceremony.
