 Situated on the bank of river Yamuna the Red Fort of Delhi was constructed by Shah Jahan after completed the memorial Taj Mahal during 1639 -1648. This historical architecture was finished after invested about one crore rupees within nine years. Half of this sum was spent to build the exotic palaces within the fort. Built of red sandstone, it is octagonal in shape, with two longer sides on the east and west. In erstwhile era, it was another capital of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan after Agra .
The outskirts of the fort strong ramparts is about 2.41 km. The Red Fort rises to a height of 33.5 mtrs on the town side and 18 mtrs along the river. A wide moat surrounds the fort which was originally connected with the river Yamuna and always filled with water. Red Fort has two main gateways named Lahori Gate and Delhi Gate. There are three storeys high and are flanked by semi-octagonal towers, situated on the centre of the western and southern sides respectively.
Delhi Red Fort (Lal Quila) is the home of stunning places such as Diwan-I-Am (hall of public audiences where the Emperor used to sit and hear complaints of the simple persons). Diwan-I-Khas (hall of private audiences where the Emperor held private meeting), Hamam , Moti Masjid , Mumtaz Mahal, Rang Mahal, and Khas Mahal are also important to see for the visitors.
Red Fort or Lal Quila is an important symbolic monument in India in today's time. Every year on Independence Day (15th August) the Prime Minister of India hoists the national flag and addresses the nation, from the ramparts of Red fort.
