Muharram is so called because it is against the law to fight during the entire month. Muharram is one of the four regional and devotional months of the year in which fighting is taboo. It is not a festival of joy or celebration rather Muslims mark the beginning of New Year by putting up the black outfits which is the symbol of sorrow and become a part of mourning gatherings in which the sacrifices of Husain and his companions are memorialize. Muharram is one of those four months of the year in which any kind of clashes are prohibited. It is a month with which lunar Hijrah Calendar is started by Muslim people. It is one of the four sacred months about which the Holy "Quran" says, that the number of the months is twelve (mentioned) in the Book of Allah on the day He created heavens and the earth. As t he Islamic calendar is lunar, Muharram moves from year to year when compared with the Gregorian calendar.

Muharram is held to be the most sacred of all the months, exclusive of Ramadan. It is the same month when Husain, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (Huzoor Sall-Allahu Alayhi Wa Sallam), was cruelly slaughtered in Karbala along with his family and friends in the year 680 CE/61 AH.

The mythological story tells that Husain Ibn Ali, the grandson of the Islamic prophet Muhammad Sahab was slaughtered at the fight of Karbala in the year 61 AH or 680 AD. It is a day of vocalizations , public processions, and of course, great grief too. Men and women recite and weep, in mourn of Husayn, his family, and for his followers.

According to Muslim region and traditions, there are four sacred months; these are Dhul-Qa'dah, Dhul-Hijjah, Muharram and Rajab. All the reviewer of the Holy Quran is undivided on this point, because the Holy Prophet, Sall-Allahu Alayhi Wa Sallam, in his lecture on the event of his last Hajj, stated that One year consists of twelve months, of which four are consecrated months, three of them are in sequence; Dhul-Qa'dah, Dhul-Hijjah, Muharram, and the fourth are Rajab."
