Mehrangarh Fort, Jodhpur

Mehrangarh Fort Jodhpur The Mehrangarh Fort is one of the largest forts and the most magnificent fort, located in the picturesque city Jodhpur and it was founded by Rao Jodha in 1459 but succeeding rulers of Jodhpur have also added to it over the centuries. A tortuous road leads to the from the city 5 kms below. Battle disfigurements of canon ball hit by attacking armies of Jaipur can still be seen on the second gate. In the direction of the left is chhatri of Kirat Singh Soda, a soldier who fell at that moment while shielding the fort against the armies of Amber.

Situated on top of a hill which is all of 125 meters high, Mehrangarh Fort has total seven gates, but there are three gates of triumph including Jayapol meaning victory built by Maharaja Man Singh to memorialize his victories over Jaipur and Bikaner armies. Fattehpol also meaning victory gate was constructed by Maharaja Ajit Singh to mark the defeat of Mughals. Lohapol Gate meaning Iron Gate has a moving memorabilia on palm print of the queens of Maharaja Man Singh who threw themselves on his funeral pyre in an act of sati 'self-immolation'. The palm imprints still be a focus for devotional attention, are covered by vermilion paste and paper-thin silver foil.

Mehrangarh fort is regarded as one of the finest museums in Rajasthan and certainly the best design. In the palanquin section of the fort museum, you can see an interesting collection of old royal palanquins including the elaborate domed gilt Mahadol palanquin was won in a battle from the Governor of Gujarat in the year of 1730. The museum exhibits the heritage of the Rathores in armaments, costumes, paintings and adorned period rooms.

Moti Mahal - It is made of elaborately carved stones is the residing place of the royal throne of the picturesque city Jodhpur which is well-known referred to as the Srinagar Chowki in local Rajasthani minuscule art work.

Ajit Villa - It is eye-catching with its rich collection of musical instruments as well as majestic garments while the gorgeous Phool Mahal is where the legendary Jodhpur Coat of Arms is conserved. The parapets of Phool Mahal are adorned with exquisite art works representing a variety of melodious scenes.

Phool Mahal (Flower Palace), is the grandest of Mehrangarh's period rooms, the Phool Mahal was in all likely hood a private and exclusive hall of pleasure dancing girls once swooned in exhaustion here under a ceiling rich in gold filigree. The grandest Phool Mahal was built by Maharaja Abhaya Singh for the period of 1724-1749, and the gold came from Ahmedabad in Gujarat as hostilities booty after his renowned victory over the insubordinate Mughal ruler, Sarbuland Khan.

Jhanki Mahal - From where the royal ladies observed the official proceedings, in the courtyard, today houses a rich group of the royal cradles which are bedecked with gilt mirrors and figures of fairies, elephant and birds.
