Humayun's Tomb, Delhi

Humayun's Tomb Delhi Humayun's Tomb is nestled on the Mathura Road , near it's crossing with Lodi Road . Humayun's Tomb is covered a large square garden fraction, screened by high walls, with gateways to the south and west, the tomb is a quadrangle tower surmounted by a glorious marble dome. The dome stands 140 feet from the base of the patio and it is topped with a copper apex. The tomb is a sort of pioneering landmark of the Indo-Islamic architecture.

Humayun's Tomb was constructed in red sandstone, white and black marble marks the begging of a new tradition of ornate style which culminated in the Taj Mahal of Agra, and it was designed by the Persian architect, Mirza Ghyas, Humayun's Tomb appears a marked shift from the Persian tradition of utilizing coloured tiles for decoration.

Humayun's Tomb was built by the grieving widow, Haji Begum in 1565 AD, and it was added to unesco's World Heritage List in 1993. The emperor's wife Begai Begum also was buried in the tomb and the structure is first of its kind built in the hub of a well-planned garden. The assimilation of white marble as well as red sandstone was a great influence on later Mughal architecture.

The earliest Mughal Emperor, Babur, was succeeded by his son, Humayun, who ruled in India for a decimal but was debarred. In the end, he took refuge with the Safavid shah of Persia , who succored him regain Delhi in 1555, the year before his death. Humayun's Persian wife, Hamida Begum, Took charge of the construction from 1562-1572 of her husband's tomb.
