 Gandhi Jayanti is a national holiday celebrated in India on the occasion of the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, the "Father of the Nation". Mahatma Gandhi's full name is Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi born on October 2, 1869 at Porbandar, Gujrat in India . He was one of the most respected leaders of the 1900's. Every year date of birth is celebrated as "Gandhi Jayanti". This day is one of the three officials declared National Holidays of India and is celebrated in all the states of India and union territories. The United Nations General Assembly made an announcement on 15 th of June 2007 that it adopted a resolution which declared that 2 nd of October will be observed as the International Day of Non violence .
Gandhi ji was a preacher of truth and 'Ahinsa'(non-violence).He began the 'Satyagraha' motion for the Indian freedom and liberty struggle. Mahatma Gandhi is a great example of minimalism as he was a simple man, with simple tastes and high values. He believed in simple living and high thinking and in 'Swadeshi'. He showed to the whole world that independence can be achieved through the course of non-violence. Gandhi ji himself is a symbol of peace and truth and great example in front of the world.
On this day (Gandhi Jayanti), the President and Prime Minister, along with other reputed political leaders, pay reverence at Raj Ghat - the Samadhi of Mahatma Gandhi. All the offices and schools, throughout the country, are kept closed on this day. The birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi is celebrated with admiration all over the country. He is the man who played a noteworthy role in achieving independence for India from the British Empire with his simplicity and strong power of his determination. Gandhi ji is also known as 'Bapu' or 'Father of the nation. Mohandas Karam Chand Gandhi completed his law study in U.K and in South Africa he practiced law. But he left his profession and came back to India to join the Indian freedom struggle with great efforts.
A prayer gathering is held at Rajghat, Gandhi's samadhi in New Delhi . To mark the admiration that Gandhi had for all the religions and communities, representatives from different religions take part in it. Rhymes and prayers are read out from the holy books of all the religions. Mahatma Gandhi's favorite song which Raghupati Raghava, is consistently sung at all the assemblies related with him. Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated all over the country, in both government and non-government forums.
